Saurabh Deoras > "Bean Hollow Tidepool"
Location: Bean Hollow State Beach, San Mateo County, California.

Bean Hollow state beach has such interesting rock formations that can keep a landscape photographer busy for months. I have a few spots that I frequently visit on this beach and fine tune my images by shooting over and over at those spots. One such spot is this tidepool where, in particular, I like the central rock.

This was shot during sunset when the last rays of the light directly illuminated the rocks. Shooting at sunrise could be tricky but I may just give that a try as well... will see how that goes later.

Tech Info:
Lens: EF 17-40 f/4L @22mm
Camera: Canon 5D Mk II
Exposure: 71sec at f/13 and ISO 50
Filters: A circular polarizer to remove glare off water surface, then two LEE ND Grads 0.9 Hard edge and 0.75 Soft Edge stacked together to balance lighting in the sky and the foreground.

I like to bring out the natural colors in the image that are often impossible to capture without good lighting conditions. Most of my images were shot during twilight conditions and have minimal post processing that is often limited to dodging, burning and saturation adjustment. These techniques, though much easier to apply in digital era, have been used since the dawn of photography.
Saurabh Deoras > "Pacific Sunset II"
Location: Graywhale Cove, San Mateo County, California.

A long exposure with minimalist composition was definitely the way to go for this image. The sunset light that was reflecting off the water was very subtle and using long exposure the water was rendered smooth and quiet adding to the mood of the image.

Tech Info:
Lens: Canon 17-40mm f/4L @17mm
Camera: Canon 5D Mk II
Exposure: 15sec at f/16 and ISO 50
Filters: SinghRay 3 Stop ND grad hard edge to balance exposure of the sky and the foreground

An image shot directly facing the direction of the sun can often result in excessive contrast or dark areas. Using graduated neutral density filters I could "even-out" the exposures in the sky and land but that was not enough. By selectively working on the shadow areas in post processing I could obtain this image that resembled what I saw.
Saurabh Deoras > "Heaven's Trail"
Location: Mt. Tamalpais, Mill Valley, California.

Among the places that can make you feel being on the edge of the earth, Mt. Tamalpais certainly ranks high in its ability to do so. A visit to this area during summer months is guaranteed to give you a view that is out of this world. The undulating hills rise above the fog which rolls into the San Francisco bay from the Pacific ocean. And what could be a better way to explore such landscape than to hike on the trail carefully managing steep slopes on all sides. I saw fog here several times but I never saw the moonrise. This day was truly special.

Tech Info:
Lens: Canon 70-200mm f/4L @70mm
Camera: Canon 5D Mk II
Exposure: 25sec at f/9 and ISO 1600
Filters: singhRay 3 stop ND grad hard edge

ISO 1600 is very unusual for me. I usually shoot at ISO 50 or ISO 100, however, in this case the scene was near dark and without high ISO sensitivity it would be impossible to get correct exposure.
Saurabh Deoras > "Sunset Light on Golden Gate"
Location: Golden Gate National Recreation Area, San Francisco, California.

It was a beautiful day in the bay and yet there was no one on the bridge!... Well, the truth is that I was witnessing one of the best lighting conditions and wanted to make the best of it photographically. Using long exposure time for this image I blurred all the cars on the bridge making it look empty. Hope you enjoy this view.

Saurabh Deoras > "Golden Gate and Rainbow"
Location: Crissy Field, San Francisco, California

It does not rain much in California, but when it does it can sometimes create very unique lighting conditions. The early morning light on the bridge had wonderful contrast against the dense storm clouds behind the bridge. Adding to the drama the rain had started pouring and even created a rainbow. Soon afterwards the rain caught up to me but I was ready with my rain gear :)

Saurabh Deoras > "Fog City - San Francisco Skyline"
Location: Fort Baker, San Francisco, California.

The magic hour at dusk is a great time to shoot the skyline of the city. I liked the golden lights that had just switched on and were illuminating the fog layer above the city. The fog can be quite dramatic during summer months and can seen rolling into the bay at evening. This is a very high resolution image where can see individual windows in the buildings and can also read the text on the Fort Mason building.

Tech Info:
Lens: Canon EF 70-200 f/4L IS @135mm
Camera: Canon 5D Mk II
Exposure: 30sec at f/9 and ISO 100
Filters: SinghRay 2 stop hard edge ND grad

The waterfront area at Fort Baker is a great place to shoot not just the skyline but also the Golden Gate bridge. I had originally planned on shooting the bridge which is just to the right but light was better looking towards the skyline. And if you are in mood for crab you can also catch some here.
Saurabh Deoras > "Passage of Time"
Location: Natural Bridges State Beach, Santa Cruz, California.

If you go to Santa Cruz, California, one of the interesting places to visit is the Natural Bridges State Beach. The name comes from a few naturally formed arches which once stood here. The very forces that create the arches gradually erode and cause them to collapse into the ocean. As you can see only one arch now remains. As the storm clouds move over northern California this last standing arch battles the elements one more time.

Tech Info:
Lens: Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L @43mm
Camera: Canon 5D Mk II
Exposure: 55sec at f/14 and ISO 50
Filters: Three 8 stop Solid ND filters stacked together to drastically cut down the light and allow long exposure of up to a minute.

Direct light on the arch is a rare event. I have been to this beach countless times and have never seen it like this. A unique combination of dark sky behind the bridge and the late afternoon light lead to a nice contrast between the arch and the sky.
Saurabh Deoras > "Rocks of Pescadero"
Location: Pescadero State Beach, California.

What I love about coastal photography is that every beach has something unique about it. On Pescadero the highlight ought to be these rocks that constantly get pulled in by the waves and pushed back ashore with every tide cycle.

Tech Info:
Lens: Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L @24mm
Camera: Canon 5D Mk II
Exposure: 10sec at f/9 and ISO 50
Filters: SinghRay 2 stop and 3 stop ND grad stacked together

The dramatic perspective of the rocks was created using the wide angle lens positioned close to the ground and directly behind the largest rocks. Use of wide angles is interesting and often tricky due to perspective distortion but can help to create dramatic landscapes.
Saurabh Deoras > "Embarcadero - San Francisco Skyline"
Location: Embarcadero, San Francisco, California.

Embarcadero, meaning a place to embark, is an area in San Francisco with rich historic past and a very popular tourist attraction. Viewing embarcadero from the spot where I was standing literally felt how it would have been like to embark on a ship from this port. The fog often covers the city and I decided to capture some motion in the fog to further add to the feel of the image.
